Older Americans will get some relief with $200 payments by year's end.

New York's Onondaga County lawmakers have passed a plan to send seniors money they didn't have to pay the bills and struggled during the pandemic.

"With everything else going up, even if they boost Social Security a little, there isn't a lot of flexibility," Peggy Chase, said.

A total of $5.5 million will be spent on relief payments, which will be funded by the county's $200 million cash reserves.

How do you qualify for this benefit?

Those enrolled in Enhanced STAR property tax exemptions for the 2022-2023 school year will automatically qualify for a $200 check.

The eligibility for the tax exemption is as follows:

The Home Owner must be 65 years or Old and...

The House hold Income must not exceed $92,000.

Around 27,500 households are receiving benefits under the program .

For the STAR exemption, you can download the forms online.

These forms need to be filled out and returned to an assessor.

There is no clarity about whether you can qualify for a $200 check if you are not already enrolled.

According to a report by Syracuse.com, the checks will be mailed in December.
