Getting to Know the Different Variations of Blackjack

The first record of a card game that was the precursor to Blackjack dates all the way back to the 17th century. 400 years on, Blackjack is one of the most popular card games on the planet. But there are dozens of different versions. If you’re new to playing the exciting card game, you need to get to know the different variations of Blackjack before you begin playing. Here are some of the most popular versions.

American Blackjack

The most popular version of blackjack in the world is American Blackjack, which is also known as Classic Blackjack. Basically, players and the dealer are dealt two cards each. One of the dealer’s cards, known as the hole card, is dealt face down. You can choose to stick with the cards you have or you can select more cards from the pack. The dealer does the same. The winner is the person with a hand that equals or is closest to 21. If your hand’s total goes over 21, it’s a bust and you lose the hand. There are some other differences between American Blackjack and other variations of the game, such as doubling down and splitting options.

European Blackjack

The key difference between American and European Blackjack is the dealer does not get the hole card until the player has decided how to play his or her cards. As the player, you can stand, hit, split, or double, as with American Blackjack, but you can also double down on hands that have values of 9, 10, or 11.

Live Blackjack

Live Blackjack can be any variation of the card game but it is typically either American or European Blackjack. The game of Live Blackjack is played online. However, when you play live blackjack, you feel like you’re in an actual casino because you get to play against a real dealer who is located in a studio. You play the game in real-time and you can interact with the dealer and other players, making for a truly immersive experience.

Spanish Blackjack

The key difference of Spanish Blackjack, which is also known as Spanish 21, is it’s played with six or eight deck cards. Cards with a value of 10 are removed from the pack, leaving 48 cards to play with. The other main difference is the dealer is allowed to look at his or her hole card to see if he or she has gotten 21.

Blackjack Switch

In Blackjack Switch, players get two hands to play individually. Players can switch the second cards dealt between their two hands to gain better hands. All of the cards are dealt face up. The other rules of Blackjack Switch are mostly the same as American Blackjack.

Vegas Strip Blackjack

No, Vegas Strip Blackjack is nothing like strip poker in which you bet with items of clothing. Vegas Strip Poker is named after the famous Las Vegas Strip, where you’ll find some of the most popular and famous casinos and hotels in the world. The game is similar to American Blackjack but the dealer is allowed to look at his or her hole card and it’s played with four decks. Also, the dealer has to stand on a soft 17, and doubling down is allowed after splitting the aces.

Progressive Blackjack

Progressive Blackjack is similar to regular American or European Blackjack except that players have the chance to win an increasing jackpot. You usually have to make an additional $1 bet. Most other rules are the same, although there can be variations with regards to cards that you can hit, stand, double, or split. Basically, with Progressive Blackjack, the jackpot gets progressively larger.
